When applying for a job, we dress up our cover letter and politely state we are interested in applying. Yet we don’t speak the way we do in our day-to-day lives - do we?

We speak professionally.

Or, we code-switch.

Like we are rehearsing for tea with the queen.

I noticed myself using this type of speech only when I was in a situation where I felt that the way really spoke didn’t quite measure up.

At a job. In front of an important client.

I was trying to be cordial.

Have you ever done this, or is it just me?

“Attached herewith is my resume. I am hoping for your favorable feedback from this application”.

Now, you may not change your language to this extreme, but I am sure you aren’t too far off when applying or posturing for something important.

So what’s the problem with this slight over-politeness?
