Stop Appraising Your Life And Wondering If You’re Better Or Worse Than Others Based On Social Media

#quotingmyself #thejoinermethod Ever had a moment where you look at somebody on IG and think — damn, their life is PERFECT?

Then you felt a type-a-way? Even though we KNOW it’s social media. Even though we know that no one is ‘gramming’ about them bill collectors. No one is sharing the fact that they are one payment away from eviction.

No one is hashtagging that they’re in the club because their hashtag #bediscoldandempty What we see is a carefully curated and shared set of pictures and videos that show the best of the best of a person’s life experience. We all know this, because we all do this.

I had a conversation with an old friend about social media, and she said she had to get off because she felt inadequate. But before she left she made the ‘I am detoxing for a week everybody’ announcement. Nothing says I need attention more than an announced break/retirement from social media. Just get off if that’s what you want to do. If you need to take a break because YOU allow yourself to judge yourself based on social media, it’s YOUR fault. We should be aware enough to know that social media shows a ‘part’ of our lives, but not our whole life.

Some people call me a guru. I don’t correct them.
